What Are The Best Hot Dogs?

The answer to "what are the best hot dogs?", will depend greatly on many factors. Where you grew up, what brand your mom gave you as a kid, where you live now, the hot dog brand your favorite restaurant or vendor uses or just what brands are available at your local store. All these factors and more contribute to your answer to which are the best hot dogs.

To try and get to the bottom of this dilemma, we must first understand where the different brands originated and some of the history behind them.

Hot dog brands have been around as long as the Hot Dog itself. They might not have been labeled as such but there were joe the butchers dogs and sam the sausage makers dogs. What we consider Brand name hot dogs appear to have started in the late 1890's, with most well known brands today starting between then and 1930. Ball Park would be one exception not having started until the 1950's.

While I have searched I have as of yet not been able to find a definite first commercial brand hot dog, but the search continues (if you know or have some insight please let me know).

Today there are literally hundreds if not thousands of Hot Dog Brands, some of them are well known nationally such as Oscar Mayer, Sabrett, Nathan's, Hebrew National and Ball Park. Most though are more regional and develop strong loyal followings that the national brands have a hard time competing with. But that still leaves the question who has the best hot dogs?

Which brand do you think has the best hot dogs? Share it with us, our goal is to list as many brands as possible, so everyone can share their opinions to try to get to the bottom of this question of who has the best hot dogs and also to introduce the rest of us to new varieties of our favorite food. So don't be shy let your voice be heard!

So Who does Have The "Best Hot Dogs"?

If you ask 100 people you would get at least 50 different answers. It is a very subjective question and the answer can depend on which region you are in, the type of hot dog(all beef, natural casing, kosher ect....)and also what use you are asking about. I know for me I have a "best brand" hot dog recipefor the grill and "Oscar Mayer" wieners for no-bun dishes. So as you can see it is not a very easy question to answer.

If you go just by retail sales numbers you would have to say Oscar Mayer and Ball Park are number 1 or 2 depending on the week. But if you are deciding by any other factor then you will get as many answers as there are brands themselves. Every region has it's own "Best Hot Dogs" and will fight to defend it's honor!

This question one of the most ask and honestly there is no right or wrong answer. The brand you think has the best hot dogs, is the best for you, and in the end enjoying a great tasting Hot Dog Is the ultimate goal!

How Can I Choose Which Brand has
The "Best Hot Dogs' For Me?

Like I said above there is no brand that can claim to have the true "Best hot dogs" for everyone, but if you are looking to open a business or only want to serve and enjoy the best at your next cookout  but you are not sure which way to go. Then I will offer this advise, Narrow down your choices to about 4 or 5 of your best brands. Next invite over the family and friends for a little blind taste test, give them a sample of each brand and be sure to mix in different types as well (all beef, kosher, natuural casing ect...) unless you have already settled on a type. Now enjoy some great dogs and let them tell you which is best, then go with their decision. The great thing about it is you can do this more than once( just to be sure...) and as a true Hot Dog lover you will relish(pun intended) the opportunity to try several brands of Franks.

The bottom line is you never have to settle for one variety, there is no true "best hot dogs", only good and better. Over the years the one you pick today might even change for you as you try different brands and types of hotdogs.
